What does a first flush diverter do?

Contaminants from a roof are usually concentrated in the first run off from the roof. After this runoff has passed and washed over the roof the water is considerably safer.  First Flush or Rain Diverters, as the name implies, flush off the first water of a storm before it enters the storage tank. This is the water that could be the most contaminated by roof particulates, bird droppings, and other materials laying on the roof. Eliminating these contaminants before they enter into your storage and conveyance system is critical to keeping rainwater clean. As a general guideline First Flush devices should remove about 10 gallons (37.8 liters) of water per 1,000 square feet (92.9 square meters) of roof/catchment area. A 2009 study in the UK showed that diverting the first part of the rainstorm can reduce the incoming contamination by 90%!

Water quality should be the main concern of everyone, even for non-portable water, and it is important to establish basic guidelines to avoid excessive treatment and worry.  Keeping the roof  and gutter conveyance clear of leaf matter is important for the rain wrangler.  Installing a durable, sealed rain tank with a first flush diverter is also key to reducing contaminants.
